Editorial Services
I am a professional editor and have worked in multiple genres with authors at all levels—from unpublished to established. I believe an editor’s role is to collaborate with and support the authors they work with. Authors have full control, and as an editor it is my job to help you get your book to be its best. I want you to be wildly successful and I will put everything I have into helping you get there.
With developmental, content, and copy editing projects I create an editorial note. My notes are a large part of my process, and they are where I break down and detail each aspect of a work. I divide my note into sections, so there is very specific and actionable feedback. I also offer suggestions about how to go about revising, where to start, and what steps to take. I will make smaller notes, comments, and suggested edits in the word file using track changes in Microsoft Word. I follow the appropriate style guide for the project (ex. fiction books use CMS).
Developmental/Content Editing
This is generally the first type of editorial work a work goes through. Developmental (or content) editing looks at the global aspects of a work like structure, language, characterization, formatting, style, narrative, and other such aspects. This is a big picture look at a work, more concerned about the content and how it is presented.
This stage includes a detailed editorial note which will look at each part of your manuscript and talk about what works, what needs more attention, and offers specific recommendations—every part of your book is broken down and analyzed. Here is an example of an editorial note in my style. I also make margin comments and notes throughout the manuscript with specific feedback.
Communication is done primarily via email, though I offer a phone or video call the discuss the editorial note/critiques.
Line Editing
This level of editing looks closely at the text, and focuses on the style and clarity of language over mechanics.
This is for manuscripts that have already undergone developmental edits, but not a copy edit. This type of edit isn’t necessary for every author or manuscript, but it is very helpful for new or less experienced authors.
This stage has comments and corrections in the manuscript (using track changes) and may have some global questions/comments but does not include an editorial note.
Communication is done primarily via email, though I offer a phone or video call the discuss the edits if desired.
Copy Editing
This level of editing is still concerned with global aspects but looks closely at the text. This type of editing checks consistency and accuracy.
This is for manuscripts that have already undergone developmental edits, but it is not a proofread. I will address every error I catch, but it is important to have a separate proofread before publication.
This stage has both an editorial note and a style sheet in addition to comments in the manuscript (using track changes).
Communication is done primarily via email, though I offer a phone or video call the discuss the editorial note/critiques.
Proofreading
This is the last step of the editorial process and is mainly focused on correcting errors.
This stage does not have an editorial note, instead, changes are marked in the document using track changes.
I recommend using a separate proofreader from your other editor, as this stage aims to fix errors. Often errors get overlooked because you know what it is supposed to say, so it can be easy to miss some minor mistakes.

Rates
My rates are always within industry standards, and I will provide an estimate with the expected costs and timeline before starting any project. I will only ever charge for the work I do, even if it is less than the amount I quote. I am always transparent in pricing, so there will never be any surprises or hidden fees. Editorial work is an investment, and I am clear about the work I do. My goal is to help you improve your work, and I will do whatever I can to assist you.
For the sample edit, the entire fee is due upfront. For projects undergoing a full edit, half of the fee is due a week before the scheduled start date, with the rest due within a week of the delivery of the edited manuscript. However, I am open to a different payment schedule if you prefer. All payments are collected via PayPal. I will send an invoice to your email, which will include directions for payment. You do not need to have a Paypal account to make a payment, and Paypal does not share any details about your payment method with me.
Rates are dependent on what type and level of editing you require. Each project has different needs and goals so they are evaluated on a case-by-case basis. I charge per word, using the count of the manuscript when I receive it. This means you know the exact total at the beginning of the project so there are no surprises.
